Description
Federal Premium Ammunition 243 Winchester
The Federal Premium Ammunition 243 Winchester is a popular hunting cartridge for deer-sized games, and it fires the 6mm bullet. It is a bit heavier than the .223 and has some good shots for long-range shooting, but there are not many match-grade loads available from factory ammo makers. Buy Black Hills Gold Ammunition 243 online.
In particular, I think Federal Premium 243 Win Rifle Ammo loading with the 100 grain Nosler Partition is a better option for elk hunting with the .243 Winchester. It is outstanding all-around ammunition, and it’s tough to go wrong with the Barnes VOR-TX line.

I have my own built AR-15, Spike lower with fixed stock, 2 stage trigger 3 1/2lbs. pull RRA with a delton upper, 24\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” SS bull barrel Stag Arms 1/8 Twist and this rifle LOVES Hornady V-Max 55gr. I can put 3 in the same whole and 5 rounds within a dime and/or nikle size at 100yds, and 1\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” group at 200 yds. 🙂

I shoot this out of my bushmaster predator with 1/2\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” accuracy. Great load for varmints, and deer. Dropped a whitetail buck at 217 yards with a neck shot. Try it you\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’ll love it!

I get ½ inch groups at 100 yards from both my both my Mossberg MVP Varmit 1:9 twist and Rock River Varminter. Accurate, consistent, reliable. Would consider it for coyotes out to 300 yards and smaller varmints up to 500. Also, a good price point.

I shot a 145 lbs Hog at 120 yards and drop him in his tracks. Upon inspecting the hog the bullet did everything that other viewers had said the round would do.
Alan (verified owner) –
The ammo will shoot 0.75 groups all day if I do my part. I tried 10 different manufacturer loads until I found this Hornady load and this was the factory load my rifle likes the best.
Kaden Arabic (verified owner) –
1 shot 1 kill. This is the only ammo to use deer hunting. I have killed multiple whitetails using this ammo.

Out of a DPMS Bull 20, shot 1/4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” groups at 100 yards and at 200 yards shot 3/4\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\” groups multiple times with a slight cross wind. Very clean ammo cycles perfect and shoots great. My groups were also five shot groups at both 100 and 200 yards.

I use this ammo in an older Remington 700 BDL varmint rifle with heavy bull barrel. This ammo is tack driving accurate out to 200 yards each and every time I use it. Highly recommended.

This ammo shooting s great out of my ruger556. Very consistent groups

With the advanced cartridge making done by today’s makers I don’t handload…”I”… that is precision. COAL is everything to your rifle. The jump from throat to lands is very very important to down range ballistics. So I sighted in a new Ruger American chambered in 5.56×45, 1/8″ CHF bbl., with its stock base, walmart rings and a walmart Nikon at 100m. The image depicts Hornadys TAP line of .223 55g VMAX’s. These loads are almost identical except for the crimp cannelure. Hornady doesn’t use a cannelure on the varmint express because chances are it’s going into a bolt gun and not a semi rifle. Either way, I have taken many many many coyotes and shot sub minute groups with this round.
Michael (verified owner) –
I shoot Prairie Dogs at 600 yards with this Ammo This is the one that remains consistent

Just what you would expect from Hornady products. Shoots sub MOA groups. Havn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t had a chance to try on coyote yet, but it is fast, accurate, and dependable.

Out of 20\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\”, 7.7 twist Krieger bull barrel, this ammo shoots very well. I will update the review when I do mid range testing out to 600 yards and for FPS, SD and ES testing. See the photo 4 shot group at 100 yards.

My favorite ammunition for coyotes, squirrels, and any other vermin or predators that end up in my crosshairs. Accuracy is great, and I have no problem using this as a home defense ammunition out of my MSR. Or, as a hunting round from my MSR. Great stuff!

High quality, high performance ammo. Just what you would expect from Hornady. Works great for bustin yotes!

I have a Rock River 18″ Predator Pursuit in stainless with a 1/8″ twist. She’s topped off with a Nikon with turret set for 3240ft/sec rounds. When I’m having a really good day, these rounds will just about go through the same hole every time. Took a young man deer hunting with me last year and he made a 225yd head shot his 2nd time ever on the gun. Also had these rounds at the range with a guy next to me shooting hand loaded customs, and I was out shooting him. He asked what I was shooting and looked visibly upset that I was shooting factory loads. Tried other loads a couple years ago and a few were OK, but these Hornadys beat the pants off anything else I’ve tried. I’ve also smacked a couple coyotes with these rounds with “dirt nap” results. With the accuracy these Hornadys have, there’s no good reason for me to even try any other round.

I bought this ammo out of a wim.and man with a ruger 223 I shoot dime size groups at 150 yards no problem.absolutely no problems with loading and unloading.unlike cheap ammo.I now shoot all Hornady red tip ammo out of all my rifles.

0.5″ group at 100 yards was the smallest group I got using this ammo in a Remington 700 Varmint 2″ fluted barrel with 1:12″ twist.

Just buy this ammo, nothing better unless you reload yourself. But as for me, this ammo will shoot 1/2 groups at 100, unless you are shooting very large numbers of rounds, and if you figure your time as anything. You don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t need to spend your time reloading. This ammo is so good; I can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t get myself to sit in front of the reloader. I can\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t get any better groups with my reloads. Now if you\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’re just out plinking and shooting hundreds of rounds a day. Naturally this is too expensive. But for serious hunting. This is the best commercial you can buy in my opinion.

As a Firearms retailer I get a lot of request for this ammo. My customers feel it performs exactly as and in many cases better than expected. They use it for both varmint and whitetail and hunting. I myself have used it on whitetail and hog and have been well pleased. I highly recommend this and many other Hornady Ammunition. However, remember that all firearms do not shoot different ammo as accurately as others. It is up to the individual and their likes and dislikes that determines their preferences on ammunition.

1 shot 1 kill. This is the only ammo to use deer hunting. I have killed multiple whitetails using this ammo.
David (verified owner) –
Far and away the most accurate round out of my Ruger AR556. I’ve tried about a dozen different loads and this is a clear winner. Nothing else is even close. I haven’t hunted with this (& don’t really varmint hunt so Ill likely never get the chance) so I can’t speak for its performance on game. But consistency and accuracy is sooo good I may try a couple Hornady loads in my deer rifle after using Barnes exclusively the last couple of years.

My gun is zero at 100 yards with 55gr bullets so I\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’m not surprised when my groups are low with a 75 grain projectile. Seems I always manage to throw one in an otherwise great group. Out of a 4 groove, 1:8 twist Shilen barrel with matched bolt (also from Midway). Am back at this site to get some more of this stuff!
Michael (verified owner) –
This is by far my favorite ammo in my AR’s. It consistently shoots sub MOA groups in all of my rifles. The effects on varmints is devastating.
Kayden (verified owner) –
Out of my Windham AR, this is the most accurate ammo I have used. I bought a box and fired that at 100 yards. It was so good I bought 20 boxes!! I am using it to thin the Feral Hogs around here in central Texas.

An outstanding product my new AR loves this stuff, and V-max already has a great rep
Angel (verified owner) –
Great round. Very consistent. Shooting at distance and in pretty stiff wind in SD and it performed well. To be honest, it shot identically to some reloads using the Nosler version of this bullet. My AR is a different rifle with this bullet versus the any of the common FMJ available. As I shoot out my FMJ I’ll be reloading with this bullet from now on. Hornady put together great rounds and produces very consistent performance.

Very tight groups at 100 yards out of my Rock River Coyote Carbine (16″ barrel). The accuracy and precision was outstanding for a factory load.

I am a Marine and when in the Corps in the early 90’s we qualified for the M-16 rifle out to 500 Meters using ball ammo. I put Hornady’s V-Max .223 to the test using my Bushmaster and M&P-15 Ar’s. They shoot good groups at a point target at 500 Meters and decent kill shots at an area target at 800 Meters. I didn’t have the range where I was shooting to shoot past 800 meters, but I would guess it would work fine out to 1000 Meters. Great Product!!!
Nicholas (verified owner) –
These rounds are consistent and I can get 1/4″ group at 100yds using an AR with good trigger and the AR Stoner fluted stainless 18″ barrel product 794051 .223 Remington (Wylde) also sold by Midway. Also shoot very tight in an older Savage bolt, and another bolt gun I’ve tried it in, and other AR_s. Actually, .223 V-Max shoots about as tight as good hand loads in everything I have seen it used in, especially with free float and good trigger, but can’t say that about every Hornady polymer tipped round in some of the other calibers (like A-Max .308, not found to be as good as the .223). Might also depend on the particular firearm, though, so try some and see what you get.

Go ahead and knock me for it, but I load my AR-15 with this for home defense. I’ve tested it in calibrated ballistic gelatin (with BB method), outside at 64*F ambient temp, 20% humidity. First round hit right at my POA with irons, at 25 yards. Neck length was 1″, cavity length was 5″ by 2″ wide, found a 24gr core fragment lodged at 7″. Second round also dead-on accurate, with neck length 1 1/4″, cavity length 5 1/4″ long by 1 7/8″ wide, and a 29.3gr fragment lodged at 8″. True, it doesn’t meet the FBI penetration standards. But that kind of damage will stop an attack; if you hit an arm, the muscles and tendons are shredded, the chest, it’s a punctured lung or nicked heart, abdomen, good chance that you hit the abdominal aorta or renal arteries. Plus, it’s not going to penetrate through all your drywall and take out a neighbor.

Shooting with my new VTR I get exceptional accuracy. This load will turn a Blue Jay into a ring of feathers at 100 yards. I tagged a coyote at 75 yards and she didn\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’t take a step, entrance was about the size of your finger exit was about acorn sized.
