What is The Best Shotgun Loadout for Turkey?

A standard 2 ¾-inch or 3-inch tungsten magnum charge is more than enough to kill turkeys at over 50 yards. Also, the advantages of tungsten shells make 20-gauge shotguns unquestionably effective for killing turkeys. Buy Hevi-Shot Hevi-18 TSS Turkey Ammunition 20 Gauge 3″ Online.

Is 4 or 5 Shots Better for The Turkey?

4 shots, with more than enough energy at the then accepted turkey killing ranges of 40 yards or less, can ricochet off the bone. Bourjaily goes on to write, “As a general rule, lead 6s are reliable out to 35 yards, lead 5s out to 45.

After patterning this load against other low-recoil loads, this one will be my HD ammunition. Patterns at 10 yds were half or less the size of those of the other tested loads, about 2 1/2\”, and about 2/3 the size of the others at 15yds. MUCH easier on the shoulder than regular 2 3/4\” buckshot loads, too. I was skeptical of the reduced recoil claims, but testing showed them to be completely true (of the other tested loads also, this one just patterned best for me in my 18\” cyl bore 870).

I fired this buckshot load thru an Ithaca 37 with a 20 inch cylinder bore barrel. At 15 yards the patter was about the size of a playing card. Backing up to 25 yards the group enlarged to roughly 9 inches. Recoil is also less than normal buck.

Just grabbed another 4 boxes before it went out of stock! While other ammo is drying up everywhere, shotgun ammo like this can still be found and is very usefull.I buy a little every month and stockpile it for target practice, small varmits, and game like squirrels, birds and rabbits.Though not ideal,in my opinion would be better than nothing in a close up self defense situation. With the c ovid and election chaos going on one must be patient when mail ordering-it will eventually show up! With this ammo I can at least still have a little fun with my shotguns at a reasonable price!

I bought these because I was told and also read that they can be reloaded, which they can. The only thing is that the metal expands and I had to get a shell resizer to reload them. With that said they didn\’t fail me with any problem like breaking apart on extraction like some cheaper shells have done.

With my beretta 1301 competition i hit steel targets with ease. I\’ll use these for hunting this fall also

Burns clean. Good pattern. Manageable recoil (I can shoot 8-12 boxes in an afternoon, and I\’m old). Hulls great for reloading. I\’ve never had a misfire. I now only shoot this stuff or my reloads.

Used in my Mossberg shockwave. Patterned very well at across the room distance.

Bought these shotgun shells for my MKA 1919 semiautomatic AR12. They run great with not much recoil. Very accurate on target. Have run about 200 of these and no problems with them at all. Will buy again

Spent three months testing slugs and buckshot, sizes #4 #1 and 00 in three different shotguns. A Marlin all steel pump from the early 70\’s, proven, a home defense Rem 870 with which I have a lot of training, and a Browning gas operated Gold 12, my pet of pets. Here are the results of the top two. At 20 yards – Hornady # 4 buckshot, 18 of 24 pellets at 1350 fps in a 6×6\” pattern. Federal reduced recoil, 30 of 34 pellets at 1100 fps in 10×12\” pattern. I will take the Federal because in the dark, sleepy clouded eyes, 2AM, I want the wide pattern. I suspect it will work well enough, tho the HOrnady would be more devastating. This is strictly a home defense choice. The gun used was the Browning Gold with no. 3 Invector choke but the results were just about the same with the 870 and the Marlin, both open slug barrel smooth bores. You pays your money and you takes your choice. Now a word of warning about S&B for sale at loss leader prices, here on Midway, at loss leader prices. I dont see them now, and that is good. Out of the pumps, difficult ejection, sometimes I was required to pound the recoil padded butt down on a picnic table while holding the forearm. Those S&B\’s did not want to come out, and 3 or 4 out of a box, could not be ejected without strenuous efforts that would have made you the big loser in tactical situations. Half the time, I could feel the S&B\’s dragging on the extraction, reluctant but they did come out tho much harder than they should have been. One problem was, upon measuring the unfired rounds I found them to be fractionally longer than other 2&3/4 shells, and fatter at the mouth of the case. I guess that the off size and uneven pressures had a lot to do with it. The stuff was cheap, OK for varmints in the garden or maybe a coyote blind but NOT, repeat NOT reliable.

These are some of the best and most consistent shotshells I have ever shot. I use them mostly for 3Gun competitions and they are 100% reliable in all my shotguns (Remington/Benelli/MKA/Mossberg/Saiga). Of course, Midway gets them to me quick so I never have to worry about the shipping part. These are also great for reloading!

  15. Michael (verified owner)

These shells are the most reliable in my FN SLP shotgun. At first I thought that they would not have enough energy to cycle the action. I found that even with a 2.75 dram load the 1 and one eighth oz payload generated enough pressure for reliable cycling.Mild recoil and Very clean burning too.
